Book excerpt: A National Book Award Finalist, Sarah Shun-lien Bynum's enchanting and inventive first novel is a groundbreaking, contemporary classic When a girl falls into a mysterious, impenetrable sleep, the borders between her provincial French village and the peculiar, beguiling realm of her dreams begin to disappear: A fat woman sprouts delicate wings and takes flight; a failed photographer stumbles into the role of pornographer; a beautiful young wife grows to resemble her husband's viol. Madeleine, the dreamer, travels in their midst, trying to make sense of her own metamorphosis. She leaves home, joins a gypsy circus, and falls into an unexpected triangle of desire and love. Embracing the earthy and the ethereal, the comical and the poignant, Madeleine Is Sleeping is part fairy tale, part coming-of-age story, and above all, an adventure in the discovery of art, sexuality, community, and the self.

Book excerpt: Will Their Love Survive The Storm Of Time All her life, Madeline Whitmore has had dreams of a man standing on a cliff looking out at the sea. While on vacation in Scotland, a sailboat cruise up the coast to Aberdeen becomes a nightmare when a sudden storm capsizes the vessel, and she’s pulled from the water by Iain Fraser, Baron of Glenburnie. The only problem is, she’s somehow landed in 1896 and doesn’t know how to get home. Even more disturbing is her attraction to Iain, and the desire flaring between them. Iain Fraser lost his first wife to childbirth, and even though his twin daughters need a mother, he refuses to marry again as he’s unwilling to risk another life simply to sire a male heir. When he pulls Madeline from the North Sea during a terrible storm, she presents a mystery he can’t solve. The only thing he’s certain of is that his attraction to her is growing, and if he’s not careful he might just wind up with a wife he doesn’t want, but might not be able to live without. By gathering work from across disciplines with an interdisciplinary or cross-cultural scope, the topic is opened up to new perspectives of investigation. The articles in this first issue present new and exciting analyses of such diverse discourses as mythology, the fairy tale, historiography, elite culture, landscape painting, sculpture and dreaming.

Book Synopsis by : Charles J. Rzepka

Download or read book written by Charles J. Rzepka and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romantic poetas exemplified by Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keatsis attracted to and made anxious by two opposite ideas of the self. On the one hand, he identifies with the inner self as a mind wholly at one with its perceptions and with the world as an image within it. On the other hand, since this inner self is wholly private, the poet turns to others for confirmation of its reality, either literally in direct confrontations, or figuratively, in the "voice" and workmanship of his text. Because his dependence on others for a sense of his own reality jeopardizes the poet's feelings of self-possession, however, he tries to minimize this threat by manipulating of preempting others' responses to him. Previous discussions of the Romantic self have focused on the self as a mental power immanent in the vision of the world it shapes. Charles Rzepka now draws our attention to the poet's attitude toward the self as socially formed and confirmed, and the effects of this attitude on Romantic poetry and perception.
