Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conjuring meets Sadie in this queer ghost story, when seventeen-year-old podcaster Dare finds herself in a life-or-death struggle against an evil spirit. Dare Chase doesn’t believe in ghosts. But as the host of Attachments, her brand-new paranormal investigation podcast, she knows to keep her doubts to herself if she wants to win over listeners. Her first season’s subject is the Arrington Estate—a sprawling manor rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Atheleen Bell, who drowned in its lake almost thirty years ago. Dare’s more interested in investigating the suspicious circumstances of Atheleen’s death, which she thinks point to a decades-old murder, not something supernatural. But Arrington is full of surprises. As Dare is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the estate, she’ll have to rethink the boundaries of what is possible. Because if something is lurking in the lake . . . it might not be willing to let her go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frances Tustin (1913-1994) was one of the first professionally trained child psychotherapists in Britain. Although internationally recognised for her pioneering therapeutic work with autistic children, her approach is considered by some to be controversial, as her psychogenic view of childhood autism challenged the belief that it is biological and genetic. Autistic States in Children is widely regarded as a vitally important work for understanding the causes of autism in young children. Vividly describing her clinical encounters with autistic children, Tustin argued that autistic states were above all self-protective ones. In her observational studies, she noted how autistic children's interaction with physical objects, such as keys, toy cars, or other play items, had a rigid and ritualistic quality, far removed from the typical kind of fantasy play seen in other children. Such objects are not used by autistic children for their intended purpose, Tustin argued, but rather in sensation-dominated ways that interfere with mental development. She also drew a fundamental distinction between two autistic groups: an ‘encapsulated’ group, which is withdrawn and non-verbal, and an ‘entangled’ group, who are hyperactive and chaotic but have some language. Autistic States in Children influenced not only those in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis but countless others who have contact with autistic children, especially families, and remains essential reading for anyone seeking a creative and compelling understanding of autism. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Foreword by Maria Rhode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captivating mysteries and gripping suspense blended within Christian, philosophical, and some political ideologies, and a healthy dose of imagination result in a fast-paced thriller, a stimulating and thought provoking story. Masterfully composed and written, the story leaves absolutely nothing unturned and is intriguing throughout in every sense. Andrew, a steadfast atheist, has defied his parent's attempts to raise him to be a Christian for over thirty years. However, his life and the lives of his family have been turned upside down by Islamic Jihadist terrorists who are out to kill them as well as detonate a series of nuclear weapons in an effort to destroy America. And, if that weren't enough, one nuclear device rests in a location in the United States so unique, so ingenious, its distinct placement alone can render the entire world uninhabitable. As Andrew and his family cope with the terrorists and the pending apocalypse, their beliefs and lives are put to the ultimate test. Is this the end of time predicted in the Book of Revelation? The story and its ending explore some possibilities that will be hard to ignore and some eye-opening revelations. As the tale culminates in an unexpected and most surprising conclusion that in itself becomes an absolute and decisive anecdote, the reader will realize that it intends to deliver several messages. The story is inspirational, subtly educational, and may be interactive as it is saturated with clues, hints, hidden meanings, and symbolisms that relate to how the story unfolds. Most are subtle and will require some thought to discern; however, it is not required that the reader make a conscious effort to try to identify and interpret these or participate where it is interactive to enjoy the story. Although the story is intense with substance, it is also irresistibly alluring and enchanting in an ingenious way and will appeal to anyone looking for a story that is rich with riveting suspense and mysteries in a setting that may be relevant to today's world. Book excerpt: A powerful examination of the artistic impulse, cultural identity, and family bonds Anita is waiting for Adam to be released from prison. They met twenty years ago at a New Year’s Eve party in Paris, a city where they both felt out of place—he as a recent arrival from the provinces, and she as an immigrant from the island of Mauritius. They quickly fell in love, married, and moved to a village in southwestern France, to live on the shores of the Atlantic with their little girl, Laura. In order to earn a living, Adam has left behind his love of painting to become an architect, and Anita has turned her desire to write into a job freelancing for a local newspaper. Over time, the monotony of daily life begins to erode the bonds of their marriage. The arrival of Adèle, an undocumented immigrant from Mauritius whom they hire to care for Laura, sparks artistic inspiration for both Adam and Anita, as well as a renewed energy in their relationship. But this harmony proves to be short-lived, brought down by their separate transgressions of Adèle’s privacy and a subsequently tragic turn of events. With the careful observation, vivid description, and emotional resonance that are the hallmarks of her previous novel, The Last Brother, in Waiting for Tomorrow Nathacha Appanah investigates the life of the artist, the question of cultural differences within a marriage, and the creation and the destruction of a family.
