Book excerpt: Chapter 136: Boneless man As Duong Kha Nhi spoke, she carefully observed Tang Dong's face. She witnessed Tang Dong's bravery and also felt the pure Taoist aura on her body. Tang Dong listened very calmly, but when the part came: A mark appeared on Luu Hong Duc's forehead, so she interrupted and asked Muc Dung: "Do you still keep the soul of second sister Liu?" Mu Dung said "um" and suddenly had a little guess in his mind. Tang Dong touched his chin in deep thought. Duong Kha Nhi remained silent, looking impatiently at Muc Dung and Tang Dong. After about ten minutes, Tang Dong finally opened his mouth: "Let me try." She picked up the black suitcase and placed it on the table. She took out the yellow talisman, looked at it for a moment, then returned it to its original place. She took out the talisman with the white spell drawing. She took a deep breath in regret, then turned it over. On the back of the talisman, take a brush and dip it in cinnabar, write Liu Hong Duc's name and eight characters, dry it and burn it. The talisman turned into ash, in the same position another purple talisman appeared. Tang Dong signaled for help from Muc Dung. Muc Dung took the talisman and gave it to Duong Kha Nhi.

Book excerpt: On November 25, 1950, during one of the toughest battles of the Korean War, the US Eighth Army Ranger Company seized and held the strategically important Hill 205 overlooking the Chongchon River. Separated by more than a mile from the nearest friendly unit, fifty-one soldiers fought several hundred Chinese attackers. Their commander, Lieutenant Ralph Puckett, was wounded three times before he was evacuated. For his actions, he received the country's second-highest award for courage on the battlefield -- the Distinguished Service Cross -- and resumed active duty later that year as a living legend. In this inspiring autobiography, Colonel Ralph Puckett recounts his extraordinary experiences on and off the battlefield. After he returned from Korea, Puckett joined the newly established US Army Ranger Department, serving as an instructor and tactical officer, and commanding companies at Fort Benning and in the Ranger Mountain Camp in north Georgia. He went on to lead companies in Vietnam, train cadets at West Point, and organize the Escuela de Lancero leadership course in Colombia. Puckett's story is critical reading for soldiers, leaders, military historians, and others interested in the impact of conflict on individual soldiers as well as the military as a whole.

The repercussions of this unsettling episode in American history still resonate in our society. Although it ended more than 30 years ago, the Vietnam War continues to fascinate and trouble Americans. The third edition of Light at the End of the Tunnel gives a full overview of the conflict. Starting with Ho Chi Minh's revolt against the French, editor Andrew J. Rotter takes the reader through the succeeding years as scholars, government officials, journalists, and others recount the important events in the conflict and examine issues that developed during this tumultuous time. This book is essential reading for anyone who has an interest in understanding the Vietnam War. The readings in it will enlighten students about this turning point in the history of the United States and the world. The third edition includes greater coverage of the Vietnamese experience of the war and reflects the growing interest in understanding the war as an international event, not just a bilateral or trilateral conflict.

Download or read book Becoming Refugee American written by Phuong Tran Nguyen and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnamese refugees fleeing the fall of South Vietnam faced a paradox. The same guilt-ridden America that only reluctantly accepted them expected, and rewarded, expressions of gratitude for their rescue. Meanwhile, their status as refugees—as opposed to willing immigrants—profoundly influenced their cultural identity. Phuong Tran Nguyen examines the phenomenon of refugee nationalism among Vietnamese Americans in Southern California. Here, the residents of Little Saigon keep alive nostalgia for the old regime and, by extension, their claim to a lost statehood. Their refugee nationalism is less a refusal to assimilate than a mode of becoming, in essence, a distinct group of refugee Americans. Nguyen examines the factors that encouraged them to adopt this identity. His analysis also moves beyond the familiar rescue narrative to chart the intimate yet contentious relationship these Vietnamese Americans have with their adopted homeland. Nguyen sets their plight within the context of the Cold War, an era when Americans sought to atone for broken promises but also saw themselves as providing a sanctuary for people everywhere fleeing communism.
