Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major look at the renowned industrial designer and architect, who helped to shape the look of American modernism from the 1920s through the early 1950s For German-born Kem Weber (1889-1963), design was not about finding a new expression; it was about responding to "structural, economic, and social requirements . . . characteristic of our daily routine of living." He sought to ensure that each design he produced--whether a piece of furniture or a building or an interior--was an improvement that responded to modern needs and modern life. Weber was a leading figure of modernism on the West Coast from the 1920s through the early 1950s, and his work greatly influenced the California style of the time. His most iconic designs were his Bentlock line, the Air Line chair, the interiors for the Bixby House, and his tubular-steel furniture for Lloyd. This book, a result of significant new primary research in the Weber family's archives, represents the first major study of the life and career of this important designer. Christopher Long details the full range of Weber's contributions, focusing particularly on the part he played in the advancement of American modernism, and his role in heralding a new way of making and living.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parents who come from different language backgrounds often hope that their children will be able to speak the languages of both their parents. In families where this is the goal, the 'one parent-one language' approach (Ronjat, 1913) is widely used. The 'one parent-one language' approach is relatively effective in promoting active bilingualism among young children in a society where there is little support for the minority language. However, there is a general perception that maintenance of the minority language into middle childhood and beyond is difficult as during this period children's contacts with the outside world expand and the input in the majority language increases. This book examines the sociolinguistic environment and the nature of parental input for children from Japanese-Australian families, who have been exposed to Japanese and English through the 'one parent-one language' approach in Australia. The research on which the book is based identifies factors which account for successful and unsuccessful cases of Japanese language maintenance of children from those families. The major part of this study involves discourse analysis of the conversations between four Japanese mothers and their primary school aged children based on audio-recordings over a period of 21 months. This qualitative approach is complemented by a quantitative study interviewing 25 Japanese mothers about their children's language experience.

Book excerpt: A collection of Chicago Tribune articles detailing the case and trial of the infamous police officer convicted of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio. In 2004, Kathleen Savio, the third wife of Bolingbrook, Illinois, police officer Drew Peterson, was discovered dead in a bathtub from an apparent drowning. Her death was deemed accidental—at first. In 2007, following the disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, officials reopened the Savio case with Drew as the primary suspect. Drew Peterson: The Tribune Files is a true-crime ebook comprising actual Chicago Tribune articles. By compiling years of original reporting in chronological order, this book preserves the shock of each sordid twist in real time as the story grew from a local curiosity into a national phenomenon (complete with a made-for-TV Lifetime movie starring Rob Lowe). This book captures every detail of the murders and the surrounding media circus, from Peterson’s bizarre reality TV stint as a celebrity criminal, to the chilling courtroom testimony of Peterson’s brother as he unwittingly assisted with the disposal of a human body. Special attention is paid to the trial itself, which broke legal ground when hearsay testimony from Peterson’s fourth wife, recorded before her disappearance, was allowed as evidence. The Chicago Tribune’s award-winning staff possesses the unique perspective of having covered this case from beginning to end, and the most fascinating pieces have finally been curated into a single collection of the gruesome facts.
