Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's easy for us to trust God when life is going well. But when suffering comes, trusting God's goodness, his attentiveness to what's going on in the world, and his justice becomes far more difficult. In times of intense suffering, many of us ask, Why does God allow these things to happen? In the Bible, Job is known for facing intense personal suffering. Yet, upon closer examination, we find the book of Job is about more than just Job's calamities; it's a story about God and his relationship to Christ and his people in their suffering. In this helpful guide, Christopher Ash helps us explore the question, Where is God in the midst of suffering? As we read, meditate, and pray through the book of Job, we will find assurance that God will be with us in Christ through every season and trial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of religious and cultural diversity, some doubt whether Christian faith remains possible today. Critics claim that religion is irrational and violent, and the loudest defenders of Christianity are equally strident. In response, Desire, Faith, and the Darkness of God: Essays in Honor of Denys Turner explores the uncertainty essential to Christian commitment; it suggests that faith is moved by a desire for that which cannot be known. This approach is inspired by the tradition of Christian apophatic theology, which argues that language cannot capture divine transcendence. From this perspective, contemporary debates over God’s existence represent a dead end: if God is not simply another object in the world, then faith begins not in abstract certainty but in a love that exceeds the limits of knowledge. The essays engage classic Christian thought alongside literary and philosophical sources ranging from Pseudo-Dionysius and Dante to Karl Marx and Jacques Derrida. Building on the work of Denys Turner, they indicate that the boundary between atheism and Christian thought is productively blurry. Instead of settling the stale dispute over whether religion is rationally justified, their work suggests instead that Christian life is an ethical and political practice impassioned by a God who transcends understanding.

Book excerpt: Life’s painful trials can bring shame about our inadequate and broken faith. There is relief in hearing the expressions of desperation in the psalmist’s voice. He didn’t experience this life perfected, and we don’t either. But the psalmist was loved. So are we. God was so kind to give us the Psalms. To walk through darkened days is part of the human experience. To walk through them with faith, comfort, strength, joy, and hope is part of the divine experience. Our eyes, though, are often clouded to those blessings by the thing oppressing us. When we remember and recognize our Father’s faithfulness, when we see reality with the eyes of understanding, the darkness ebbs and the light of hope grows. The impossible, unbearable, and unthinkable becomes the hidden passageway to truth, hope, and joy in Christ. These letters were originally written as encouragement to a friend when the darkness began to overtake his path. Each day for 22 days, a letter arrived with one of the eight-verse sections from Psalm 119 along with a small thought to bring light and hope and to be a reminder that we do not fight our battles alone. The letters, along with nine more devotions on the subject of experiencing God in the dark, make up this powerful, honest, hope-filled 31-day devotional.

Book excerpt: "It is utterly crucial that in our darkness we affirm the wise, strong hand of God to hold us, even when we have no strength to hold him." John Piper Even the most faithful, focused Christians can encounter periods of depression and spiritual darkness when joy seems to stay just out of reach. It can happen because of sin, satanic assault, distressing circumstances, or hereditary and other physical causes. In When the Darkness Will Not Lift, John Piper aims to give some comfort and guidance to those experiencing spiritual darkness. Readers will gain insight into the physical side of depression and spiritual darkness, what it means to wait on the Lord in a time of darkness, how unconfessed sin can clog our joy, and how to minister to others who are living without light. Piper uses real-life examples and sensitive narrative to show readers abundant reason to hope that God will pull them out of the pit of despair and into the light once again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DoC BiC's history as a disciple of Christ is long and complex. His life as a physician, surgeon and career military officer (Colonel) was built upon a spiritual foundation dating as far back as he can remember, or as he puts it: "at least since a toddler on my mother's lap in devoted church life." Doubting that he ever did consciously not believe in God, and Christ as his Savior, he does note his public formal declaration as early as around the age of twelve, already well into a Christian life of worship. Growing up in the projects of Bradenton, Florida afforded the early honing of prayer skills and spiritual warfare. And, his subsequent migration through various Protestant denominations and Catholicism helped him develop a mature view of the commonality of true worship as well as an appreciation of the divisiveness of bias within the body of Christ. He credits non-biblical doctrine and tradition as a severe stumbling block until God finally rescued him from it. Now, as he makes his rounds through non-denominational fellowships, his grey-haired perspective advances into senior mentoring and blessing of his brothers and sisters, in his love for the Kingdom of God. Long ago recognizing his calling into the office of Teacher, he has pursued his studies and support intermixed with his secular careers, always devoted to staying attuned to God's next mission for him. He partners with a devoted wife of 36 years who wears a mutually beneficial gifted intercessory prayer calling, as well as being blessed by gifted callings upon his children, equally beneficial and mutually supportive. His only pursuit today is to "Be Still", hear his Father's voice, and then move out: "I was born into death, I died into birth, and now I live in immortality to serve my Father."
