Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and Technocapitalism considers the global reach of a new capitalist era, exploring the nature of 'technocapitalism' as grounded in new forms of accumulation, commodification, and corporate organization. As technological creativity, corporate research, and talent flows become more important than ever, this book explores the manner in which globalization acquires new contextual features that will become central to the macro-social dynamics of the twenty-first century. It thus sheds light on the resultant growth in global inequalities and more intrusive forms of global domination that are grounded in emerging sectors, such as nanotechnology, biotechnology and its diverse fields, such as genomics, synthetic bioengineering, bioinformatics and biopharmacology, and related advances in computing and telecommunications. A rigorous examination of developments in contemporary capitalism as driven by the forces of globalization, Globalization and Technocapitalism will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of social and political theory, international political economy, political philosophy, science and technology studies and globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoritarian regimes have made a concerted effort to shrink the space available for civil society by restricting access to domestic decision-making, transparency, and accountability. An ultimate power ruler is known as an autocrat. A democracy’s three branches of government — executive, judicial, and legislative — serve as an essential check on an executive leader’s unchecked and uncontested power. The executive branch has grown at the expense of other branches by elected officials who regularly show disdain for the democratic principle of the separation of powers. Globally, political officials have reinforced their executive departments through the weakening of the independence and authority of the Supreme Courts. Global democracies are facing a serious threat from elected officials who occasionally refuse to step down from office. Autocracies eventually arise when a government functions without considering the needs of the very people who elected it. De-globalization, hyper-nationalism, protectionist sentiments, and divisive politics are all sharply rising. Anti-intellectual movements and sectarian politics are developing. A pluralistic worldview and secularism are under constant attack. There has been an increase in attacks on minority groups, and religion has virtually taken centre stage in all political discussions. Until 2005, the number of democracies in the world had been steadily increasing. But since then, the number has declined. Even robust democracies are now showing signs of weakness, and some have turned into hybrid regimes suspended between democracy and autocracy. Who is killing off the world’s democracies? Some autocrats or political elites are violent and intolerable. Their goals are to nationalize capitalism and seize control of the state for totalitarian purposes. They use narratives associated with right-wing populism and nationalism to rewrite history. They give the "corporate state" the illusion of democratic legitimacy. They simply ignore public concerns about freedom, justice, equality, and social discussion. Despite massive protests and opposition to their policies, they offer more undemocratic answers to urgent problems.

Book excerpt: The largest, wealthiest corporations have gained unprecedented power and influence in contemporary life. From cradle to grave the decisions made by these entities have an enormous impact on how we live and work, what we eat, our physical and psychological health, what we know or believe, whom we elect, and how we deal with one another and with the natural world around us. At the same time, government seems ever more subservient to the power of these oligopolies, providing numerous forms of corporate welfare—tax breaks, subsidies, guarantees, and bailouts—while neglecting the most basic needs of the population. In Corporate Power, Oligopolies, and the Crisis of the State, Luis Suarez-Villa employs a multidisciplinary perspective to provide unprecedented documentation of a growing crisis of governance, marked by a massive transfer of risk from the private sector to the state, skyrocketing debt, great inequality and economic insecurity, along with an alignment of the interests of politicians and a new, minuscule but immensely wealthy and influential corporate elite. Thanks to this dysfunctional environment, Suarez-Villa argues, stagnation and a vanishing public trust have become the hallmarks of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergent so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution is regarded by some as a panacea for bringing about development to Africans. This book dismisses this flawed reasoning. Surfacing how investors are actually looting and plundering Africa; how the industrial internet of things, the gig economies, digital economies and cryptocurrencies breach African political and economic sovereignty, the book pioneers what can be called anticipatory economics which anticipate the future of economies. It is argued that the future of Africans does not necessarily require degrowth, postgrowth, postdevelopment, postcapitalism or sharing/solidarity economies: it requires attention to age-old questions about African ownership and control of their resources. Investors have to invest in ensuring that Africans own and control their resources. Further, it is pointed out that the historical imperial structural creation of forced labour is increasingly morphing into what we call the structural creation of forced leisure which is no less lethal for Africans. Because both the structural creation of forced labour and the structural creation of forced leisure are undergirded by transnational neo-imperial plunder, theft, robbery, looting and dispossession of Africans, this book goes beyond the simplistic arguments that Euro-America developed due to the industrial revolutions.

Book excerpt: Departing from the conventional understanding of neoliberalism as a set of economic and political policies favoring free markets, Neoliberal Culture presents a framework for analyzing neoliberalism in the United States as a culture-or structure of feeling- which shapes American everyday life. The book proposes five 'components' as the keys to any study of American neoliberal culture: biopower, corporatocracy, globalization, the erosion of welfare-state society, and hyperlegality, these five components enabling rich analyses of key artifacts of the neoliberal era, including the Iraq War, Las Vegas, welfare reform, Walmart, and Oprah's Book Club. Carefully organized according to its central themes and adopting a case study approach in order to allow for thorough, illustrated analyses, this book is an important tool for scholars and students of contemporary cultural studies, popular culture, American Studies, and sociology.
