Book excerpt: Growing up in Maine, alone in the backseat of my parents' car, I dreamed of replicating my idyllic childhood when I was older with a family of my own. But, a revolving door of Craigslist roommates and Tinder/Bumble dates following my divorce at age 35 resulted in my adult life turning out to be the opposite of what I expected, manifested by the fact that I still find myself alone in the backseat. Faced with the challenge of making my mortgage payments after my husband left, I posted an ad to rent out my living room. Over the past eight years, I have shared my one bedroom apartment with 71 people from sixteen countries, sometimes four at a time! Thanks to my resourcefulness and perseverance, I avoided financial ruin and made friends from all over the world. Although I have experienced the lows of loneliness and divorce, I am grateful for the many times in my life I have felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Cross cultural experiences living with wonderful families in four different countries and exciting international love affairs have often made my life feel like a movie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attracting passionate fans primarily among African American listeners in the South, southern soul draws on such diverse influences as the blues, 1960s-era deep soul, contemporary R & B, neosoul, rap, hip-hop, and gospel. Aggressively danceable, lyrically evocative, and fervidly emotional, southern soul songs often portray unabashedly carnal themes, and audiences delight in the performer-audience interaction and communal solidarity at live performances. Examining the history and development of southern soul from its modern roots in the 1960s and 1970s, David Whiteis highlights some of southern soul's most popular and important entertainers and provides first-hand accounts from the clubs, show lounges, festivals, and other local venues where these performers work. Profiles of veteran artists such as Denise LaSalle, the late J. Blackfoot, Latimore, and Bobby Rush--as well as contemporary artists T. K. Soul, Ms. Jody, Sweet Angel, Willie Clayton, and Sir Charles Jones--touch on issues of faith and sensuality, artistic identity and stereotyping, trickster antics, and future directions of the genre. These revealing discussions, drawing on extensive new interviews, also acknowledge the challenges of striving for mainstream popularity while still retaining the cultural and regional identity of the music and maintaining artistic ownership and control in the age of digital dissemination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book written specifically for men in a language that is respectful to men, about how to deal better with the most important relationships in their lives. It provides real tools for men who have trouble dealing with the emotional demands of relationships and those affected by them. The premise of this book is that good, well-intentioned men can, in times of stress and emotional conflict, act in destructive ways that don't reflect their true character. From a humanistic and empathetic perspective, this book explores the latest research about male psychological development to create a new, compassionate narrative for the struggles men face. Learn to recognize and label your internal states. Find out why displays of not-so-masculine emotions are so difficult to deal with, and why they can provoke episodes of problematic behavior. Explore the father-son relationship and the reality of male peer relations; see why these patterned interactions can reinforce bad behavior from generation to generation. Structured exercises and strategies help transfer the concepts of the book into daily experience. David B. Wexler, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Relationship Training Institute, an organization designed to help couples and especially men who are having problems in relationships. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ciudad Jurez, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, sixteen-year-old Vicente and two of his high school friends murdered his mother, his father, and his little sister in cold blood. Through a Truman Capote-like reconstruction of this seemingly incomprehensible triple murder, Sandra Rodrguez Nieto paints a haunting and unforgettable portrait of one of the most violent cities on Earth. This in-depth and harrowing investigation into the thought processes of three boys leads the reader on an exploration of the city of Jurez, as well as the drug cartels that have waged war on its streets, in a bold attempt to explain the inexplicable. Ideally qualified for telling this story, Sandra Rodrguez Nieto was an investigative reporter for the daily newspaper El Diario de Jurez for nearly a decade. Despite tremendous danger and the assassination of one of her closest colleagues, she persisted. She didn't want the story of her city told solely by foreign reporters, because, in her words, "I know what is underneath the violence." This book traces the rise of a national culture of murder and bloody retribution, and is a testament to the extraordinary bravery of its author. Among other things, The Story of Vicente is an account of how poverty, political corruption, failing government institutions and US meddling combined to create an explosion of violence in Jurez.
